Outrun The Tiger
Outrun The Tiger
A “tiger mom” is usually used to describe a strict and demanding mom of Asian descent who pushes her child to the highest levels of academic achievement. This “tiger mom” archetype further perpetuates the Asian American stereotype of the model minority which can put a lot of pressure on Asian American children to obtain top marks in school. However, the pressure to always be the best can be debilitating to mental health which can lead many Asian American teens to contemplate or even attempt, suicide.
My mission is to bring awareness to Asian American mental health in order to help break down the model minority myth that boxes Asian Americans into only being “book smart” or “good at math.” When the model minority myth is dismantled then some of the pressure to always get straight A's can be lifted and the identity of Asian Americans can become separated from academic achievement.
